A carefully chosen, Swiss-made watch has always made the most wonderful gift. I would say that of course, but as well as being a thing of precision and beauty, a carefully chosen watch will be particularly treasured and will, over time, become part of someone’s personality. So how do you choose the right watch? It really depends on what we call a person’s style signature. We have identified a few personality types we all recognise and suggest how to match their style to the perfect watch for them.
‘THE MODERN CLASSICISTS’
These people know what they want and they love tradition, craftsmanship and an elegant but understated look. It might be your father, your daughter or your best friend… most of us know someone we would call classic and someone who appreciates the work that goes into making something that will last.
For Men, the C5 Malvern Automatic – £265 is the perfect choice. It’s a timeless watch with a pure design. The simplicity of the design requires the detailing of the case, hands and indices to be perfectly executed. We wanted to create a quintessentially English feel to the watch and were inspired by the Malvern Hills and Elgar’s Enigma variations when designing it. The transparent crystal case back shows off the fine Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. The Mark I Malvern, our first ever watch, was designed for ourselves. The Mark II is no different.
For Women, the Victoria S30 – £225 is a wonderfully crafted piece. Classic “blued” hands set against a finely crafted craquelere dial and a simply beautiful individually linked bracelet give the Victoria an aura of timeless elegance. This watch was inspired by Royal and Parliamentary London… the craquelere of the dial is a nod towards Big Ben.

‘THE SPORTING HEROES’
These are keen sportsmen and women who need something hardwearing and reliable. The sort of person who will go for a run even on Christmas day and who needs regular doses of exercise in order to keep them happy and balanced.
For Action Men, we have just created the C11 Makaira Elite 500 – £750. The Makaira Elite is our first watch with a super-tough titanium case. We designed this for the professional diver, with 735 psi capacity AND a helium release valve manufactured by FIMM, the world’s finest manufacturer of such things. If you’re diving deep, you need risk minimised. The movement is a chronometer, which means it has been tested to extraordinarily high standards of accuracy. I myself am a keen scuba diver so I know what’s required for a top notch diver’s watch. Striking yellow hands and dial markings shout confidence. This is not a watch for the meek. This watch is to be released in January so you will have to give an IOU for it.
For keen Sportswomen, there is the Alex Sport – £299. This is a large (37.6mm) chronograph watch with split-time and stopwatch functionality. An easy to read large date and incredibly accurate movement make this a perfect watch for those who need to measure time on the go whilst the unique pyramid design of the bracelet and dial could be a reminder of peak performance. London 2012 was in our heads when we designed this watch – it’s the sort of watch we think Jessica Ennis would wear.

‘THE BOHO CREATIVES’
Creative people have a style all of their own, the sort of look that you wish you could recreate but you’re not sure you could carry off. Unique, distinct, some might even say quirky… creative people want a watch that stands out from the crowd, something people will notice, something really unique.
For men, that watch is definitely the C9 Harrison Blue – £975 – 250 piece Limited Edition. A sapphire blue dial and matching alligator strap – could you stand out from the crowd any further? Be prepared for many a conversation in the Groucho Club. Oh, and it’s a magnificent timepiece as well, with an especially modified ETA 7750 movement to be seen through the case back – should there be a dip in the conversation or a need for inspiration.
Its history is another thing worth talking about. The Harrison collection was inspired by the great British horologist John Harrison – the man who finally solved the Longitude Problem with his H4 chronometer. And blue watches are very much on trend for men at the moment!
For women, the Emily Diamond – £399 – is a watch that really gets noticed. The double tour strap adds an unusual and distinctive flourish to the vintage, deco design of the Emily. A bohemian watch for women with creative flair.

‘THE STYLE GURUS’
Effortless style… it’s the little things that exude glamour and elegance, and glamorous people always have the perfect finishing touches – necklaces, watches, cufflinks, even the right umbrella.
For men who love those little details, we created the C700 Grande Rapide -£899. The C700 is designed to capture the technical perfection and glamour of Formula 1 where every detail is critical. From the 45-hour power reserve of the famous ETA 7750 Valjoux movement to the precision cut carbon-fibre dial, this chronograph – suitably only available in a black dial version – looks especially at home in the paddock at Monaco.
For women who love to look good, the W900 Belisama Diamond – £1250 – is luxury personified. An automatic movement, galvanic sunray dial, alligator strap, PVD gold finished case, blue cabochon stone in the crown AND 30 VVS1, Top Wesselton, full cut diamonds inlaid into the bezel. If we have a watch that has the characteristics of a siren of the silver-screen, this is definitely it.

‘THE NEW ADVENTURERS’
These are people who are always exploring new places and love exotic locations and unique experiences. People for whom holidays are the most important thing in life and their shelves are full of travel guides, their walls covered in pictures of places they have been.
For men who love to travel, there is the C60 Trident GMT – £575. Originally designed by Pan Am Pilots for Rolex in 1957 the GMT Master, as it was known, became the beacon for all subsequent GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) watches, including our own Trident. The dual time-zone function is especially useful for world travellers (and pilots) but our own version, with its uni-directional bezel allows the time to be known simultaneously in THREE time-zones! We believe our C60 Trident boldly goes where no watch has gone before.
For women adventurers, you can’t beat the W11 Amelia – £299. Named after Amelia Earhart, America’s first lady of the air this is a go-anywhere watch, especially in the silicon sports strap version.
An amazing woman, a tragic final flight and an unexplained mystery… I have been fascinated by Amelia Earhart for a very long time. The marine-grade stainless steel case of this watch is engineering perfection – more than sufficient to see anyone around the world and back a few times – and the rubber-touch, optic white dial is incredibly clear in all climates as we have fitted a museum-grade sapphire crystal with AR08 anti-reflective coating…not a lot of people know that.

‘THE CITY SLICKERS’
Looking smart is the number one priority and quality is of the utmost importance – businessmen and women want clothing that looks and feels the best and gives them confidence.
Inspired by Mad Men, the C20 Lido -£450 is a great watch for any smart professional. As if hewn from a single slab of surgical grade stainless steel, the C20 exudes masculine authority – perfect for the boardroom. A straightforward, no-nonsense dial with perfectly proportioned indexes and hands reinforces the “I mean business” look although the guilloche pattern of the centre dial may hint at hidden depths. The ETA 2836-2 automatic movement with day and date features adds to the all-round package of quality. I wanted to capture that late 1950’s American feel with this watch, something a bit Rat Pack meets 5th Avenue.
For city women, the W90 Belisama Automatic – £699 is a statement watch both in look and functionality. This non-diamond version of our first women’s automatic watch singles the wearer out as someone who understands and values the importance of a mechanical movement. Indeed, every aspect of this watch quietly confers a status on the wearer consistent with her position of authority.
